Horsemanship School is not a camp, it is a school. We are interested in teaching proper horse handling, not entertaining.

This years Horsemanship School includes lessons on horse handling, stable management, care of equipment and the proper use of that equipment in grooming horses. Lessons are provided on the lunge line as well as arena work. There’s also lecture on how to know if a horse is sick and how to handle the situation.

Each student is tested on identifying body parts of the horse and tack. They’re each given a subject to report on. Each student presents their topic to their classmates followed by class discussion.

Black Creek Stables has been proud to host these events and pleased to have the following guests: Leah Williams, Whitesboro, AL, Chelsea Slater, Jacksonville, FL, guest and working student for one month; Lauryen Noojin, Whitesboro, AL, Taylor Noojin, Whitesboro, AL, Kellie McCormack, Boaz, AL, guest and working student, Elizabeth Kantzler, Gadsden, AL, Jill Hardy, Dallas, GA, Tara Place, Dallas, GA, Maggie Hanson, Knoxville, TN, Alexis Gregory, Gadsden, AL, Phoebe Fogelman, Knoxville, TN.

Lunging School

In September, Black Creek Stables will sponsor a Horse Longeing School. Shelia Ellison will be the Head Instructor. Check our calendar for the upcoming date.

The Three Day Event includes methods of exercising the horse, training the rider, training the rider to lunge horses, how to lunge the young horse, and many safety issues when working with horses.

The objective of the above is to gain the horses confidence, teach him to balance himself without a rider, and to increase his proficiency. With the establishment of confidence, the foundation of obedience is laid. It teaches the horse what his role is.

Lungeing the horse improves lateral balance and flexibility. It develops a convex outline and strengthens musculature. This improves gait qualityand flexion for carrying weight.

Lungeing the rider improves balance and poise, reduces excess tension, develops independent limb use and masters braced back applications. It takes quantity time to arrive at quality time.
